This area is suburban in nature with a blend of new and older homes with lots ranging from one and a half to five acres. Apartments and condominiums are available in other nearby communities. Chesterland has developed into a popular suburb because of its close proximity to two major northeast Ohio cities, Akron and Cleveland, and its convenient access to major highways.

Local leaders are committed to providing an environment where people may safely raise family and confidently locate their business or industry.

There is plenty to do within just a short distance of Chesterland too, including the Akron Zoo, Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, the Cleveland Zoo and Rain Forest, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to name just a few.

Sports are big in northeast Ohio and Chesterland fans are no exception! They love their sports and their teams. A large number of youth baseball, softball, football, and soccer teams keep the boys and girls busy as well as their parents. There is also golf, tennis and bowling or you can root for the high school or area college sports teams during the school year. You can also follow your favorite professional teams such as the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Indians or the Cleveland Lumberjacks Hockey club!

The growing communities in Chesterland offer a variety of desirable housing within a wide range of prices. Established tree-lined streets feature single-family homes. Newer developments create contemporary living in single-family homes, condominiums and townhouses. Duplexes and apartments are luxurious and plentiful and senior citizen housing is available.

The quality of life in the Chesterland area is highly desirable and can be attested to by the hundreds of new families who move to the area each year. Life often revolves around families and family entertainment in a variety of ways.

Chester Township is part of the "Western Reserve", so named in September, 1786, when Connecticut gave up her Western land holdings but "Reserved" this section. The first settlers came to this area in 1801. The town was early known as Wooster, but in 1816 was changed to Chester by the first settlers, some who came here from Chester, Massachusetts. In 1899 the name was changed to Chesterland for postal reasons.

In February, 1811, David Hudson gave six and one-half acres of land on the northeast corner of SR 306 & US 322 to the Township. This is now known as Chester Township Park. The land can never be sold and is to be only used as a Public Square, a public parade ground, and for public buildings. In 1917 the trustees at that time notified a resident that he was not allowed to let cows graze on the public square.

A township is a grassroots form of government and since 1804 the governing board has consisted of three trustees and a Township Clerk. These positions are all elected for four year terms by registered voters.

The trustees are the legislative authority. Currently in office are Trustees James A. Montague, Patricia M. Mula and Charlie Stevens. A fourth official is the Township Clerk who is the fiscal officer of the Township also elected for a four year term.

The Board of Trustees appoints a five-person Zoning Commission who addresses land us issues. The Board of Trustees also appoints a Board of Zoning Appeals that is a quasi-judicial board who hears requests that are outside of the regulations of the Zoning Resolution. A Zoning Inspector monitors and approves permits for construction, signs, etc. is also appointed by the Board of Trustees.

Services to the community by the vote of the property owners are our own Police Department, Road Department and Chesterland Fire/Rescue Inc.
